Communication - The Key to Success

The Day Before Game or Day of Game – The Crew Chief (also known as the Referee or "R"):

Text/Call/Email: The School Contact in Arbiter to confirm game time and location.

Text/Call/Email: Your Partner(s) to confirm game time, location, uniform of the day, and where to meet for pre-game.

At the field:

Arrive at least 20 minutes before game time.

Conduct your Crew Pre-Game Meeting.

Be fully prepared and dressed in the appropriate uniform before you step on the field.

If you are going to be late to your game, text or call your partner(s).

Pre-Game Meeting With Coaches

THE CREW CHIEF OR "R" MUST CERTIY EACH TEAM'S HEAD COACH BY ASKING, "COACH, DO YOU CERTIFY THAT ALL OF YOUR PLAYERS ARE LEGALLY EQUIPPED BY RULE FOR THE EQUIPMENT FOR WHICH YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE?"

THE HEAD COACH MUST VERBALLY ANSWER "YES" TO YOUR QUESTION.

See NFHS Rule 1-11.

** If you are working a game SOLO: Bring both team's head coaches together in front of the table area or at midfield and certify them at the same time…. You need a witness to the coach certification!

Remind Coaches:

10-yard midfield pre-game warm-up buffer area.

Time Outs should be taken near the sideline bench area not on the field.

Other 2024 Points of Emphasis as needed: Eye Shade – Single Stroke, Properly Worn Equipment.

For example:

Defensemen must wear elbow pads correctly …. NOT on their bicep muscles.

Each Player MUST wear their Helmet & Chin Strap properly and as designed by the manufacturer.

Crew Etiquette

Let the Crew Chief or "R" do their job.

Do NOT disrespect the "R" or Crew Chief assigned to any game or scrimmage.

Only if there is an unusual situation, Do NOT start the coach certification pre-game meeting without the entire crew present.

We are a crew.

Everyone on the crew is equal.

If there is a dispute on the field, and the crew cannot agree, the Crew Chief or "R’s" decision is final.
